Proposal Would Revise Lt. Gov. Appointment Rules   Date: November 11, 2008
State Senator Dennis Pyle plans to introduce legislation requiring Senate confirmation if the lieutenant governor is appointed by the governor. The Hiawatha Republican's proposal comes amid speculation that Democratic Governor Kathleen Sebelius is going to resign to take a job in the Obama administration. That would make Lieutenant Governor Mark Parkinson the new governor. He would then appoint his replacement. Sebelius's office says she hasn't been in contact with Obama or his staff about a job in Washington.

Johnson County Commissioner Loses Seat   Date: November 11, 2008
A provisional ballot count shows that a Johnson County commissioner who was videotaped stealing his opponent's campaign signs has lost his seat. The county's election office Web site shows Calvin Hayden with 17,952 votes to John Toplikar's 17,910, a 42-vote margin. Before the provisional votes were counted, Hayden held a 52-vote edge. The race garnered attention when a videotape posted on YouTube showed Toplikar removing Hayden's campaign signs from a green area along a busy street. Olathe police filed a misdemeanor theft charge against Toplikar. In another close race, final results show incumbent House Member Gene Rardin, a Democrat from Overland Park, defeating Republican Jim Yonally, 5,522 votes to 5,431.

'Sign Theft' Race Down to Provisional Ballots   Date: November 11, 2008
Election officials are expected to release results Tuesday in the Johnson County Commission race popularized by a videotape showing the incumbent stealing his opponent's campaign signs. Thousands of provisional ballots were counted to decide the race in which incumbent John Toplikar trailed challenger Calvin Hayden by 52 votes. Toplikar had 17,580 votes to Hayden's 17,632. The race became big news when a videotape posted on YouTube showed Toplikar removing Hayden's campaign signs from a green area along a busy street. Olathe police filed a misdemeanor theft charge against Toplikar. Another close race is between Kansas Rep. Gene Rardin, a Democrat, and Republican Jim Yonally. Rardin was up 5,384 to Yonally's 5,297, an 87-vote margin.

Moran Expects Few Changes in Final Term   Date: November 11, 2008
Kansas Congressman Jerry Moran (mohr-RAN) says he's not planning any major changes in how he does his job during what's expected to be his last term in the House. The First District congressman was re-elected to a seventh term last week. On Friday, Moran notified the Federal Election Commission that he's raising money for a run for the Senate in 2010.

Listen:    Listen:

Moran won re-election with 82 percent of the vote. The Associated Press says that was the largest percentage of votes for any Republican in a congressional race. Kansas Fourth District Congressman Todd Tiahrt (TEE-art) is also considering a run for the Senate seat now held by Sam Brownback.

Recount Ordered in Crawford County   Date: November 11, 2008
Election officials in Crawford County are recounting nearly every ballot after problems with a vote scanner raised questions about some of the results. One glitch in a programming card caused some votes for one candidate to be counted for an opponent. County Clerk Don Pyle says the recount could affect the outcome in the election for county attorney.

Listen:    Listen:

Officials say it will take about a day to recount the more than 16,000 ballots that were cast in the election.
