Nov. 20,2008 05:30:PM - 07:00:PM Linda Hall Library Lecture Series Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a new technique of radiotherapy with potential application against cancer, as well as other diseases. BNCT is a binary therapy which combines two innocuous components, the element boron and low-energy neutrons, to create and fully contain radiation within the volume of a single cell. This new therapeutic technique has the potential to target and sterilize diseased cells, while minimizing the effects on healthy tissues. Furthermore, due to the nature of the radiation created using BNCT, only a single therapeutic session is required to treat patients. Dr. Mark W. Lee will present information on this new therapeutic technique. | Linda Hall Library 5109 Cherry Kansas City, Missouri 64110 Contact Information: 816-926-8770

Tuvan Throat Singing
"Imagine a human bagpipe-a person who could sing a sustained low note while humming an eerie, whistle-like melody. For good measure, toss in a thrumming rhythm similar to that of a jaw harp, but produced vocally-by the same person, at the same time." ¯Newsweek (March 17, 2006)
THE TINY REPUBLIC OF TUVA is a giant when it comes to mastery of the human voice. The ancient tradition of throat singing (xöömei in Tuvan) developed among the nomadic herdsmen of Central Asia, people who lived in yurts, rode horses, raised yaks, sheep and camels, and had a close spiritual relationship with nature. Passed down through the generations but largely unheard by the outside world, xöömei is now the subject of international fascination and has become Tuva's best known export.
WHERE IS TUVA? Tuva (sometimes spelled Tyva) sits at the southern edge of Siberia,
with Mongolia to its south. Over the centuries, Tuva has been part of Chinese and
Mongolian empires, and shares many cultural ties with Mongolia. In 1944 it became part of
the USSR, and until the late physicist Richard Feynman drew attention* to it, was largely
unknown to westerners. Tuva is now a member of the Russian Federation.
TUVAN THROAT SINGING includes a variety of styles, each associated with a different
sound in nature. In the sygyt and xöömei styles, the singer starts with a fundamental
pitch which then splits into the original tone plus one or more higher overtones that
may sound like birdsong or whistling wind. More complex throatsinging styles create rhythms or quickly changing harmonics to imitate the sounds of bubbling water or a trotting horse.

Dec. 3,2008 07:30:PM - Dec. 6,2008 07:30:PM "Rabbit Hole" at Emporia State University Emporia State Theatre continues its 2008-2009 season with David Lindsay-Abaire’s “Rabbit Hole,” winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Delicately balancing tragedy with moments of great humor, the play tells the story of Becca and Howie Corbett, who have everything a family could want, until a life-shattering accident — the death of their four-year-old son, Danny — turns their world upside down and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart.
Becca has lost interest in her house, her husband and her friends, and copes by systematically erasing all traces of Danny from their home. Howie, who can’t persuade her to return to the world of the living, is finding perhaps too much solace in his group therapy.
Becca’s irresponsible younger sister, Izzy, and their hard-drinking mother, Nat, do their best to preserve a sense of normalcy, while inadvertently pressing Becca’s buttons and creating more conflict. The final character in the play is Jason, a guilt-ridden teenager who was driving the car that accidentally hit Danny.
The trade publication Variety called the play “a revelation — an intensely emotional examination of grief, laced with wit, insightfulness, compassion and searing honesty.”
Performances will be held the evenings of Wednesday, December 3rd through Saturday, December 6th at 7:30 p.m. in ESU’s Karl C. Bruder Theatre. Jan. 16,2009 07:30:PM - Metta Quintet plus Special Guests From the work songs and spirituals that stemmed from the hardship of slavery, to the blues, to ragtime, to swinging big bands of the 1930s, to the rebelliousness of post-war Be-Bop and beyond, Stolen Moments aims to illustrate how jazz rapidly evolved from the single expression of the African-American experience to an ever-flourishing world music that has transcended ethnic and cultural boundaries.
Featuring large screen projections, an original short documentary film and new arrangement of classical jazz repertoire, Stolen Moments highlights the interplay between the jazz movement and the evolution of American culture throughout the 20th century. This program emphasizes the ways in which jazz has acted as a unifying force, bridging cultural, ethnic and economic differences in the creation of the one truly American art form.
As an engaging performance-demonstration, Stolen Moments introduces audiences to jazz music's rich history and to the names, faces and music of some of its many masters.

Feb. 4,2009 07:30:PM - The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial Entirely based on original court transcripts, L.A. Theatre Works' The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial uses the format of live in-performance radio theatre, recreated by a renowned cast of actors.
The performance dramatized the famous 1925 Tennessee v. John Scopes "Monkey Trial," which challenged the Butler Act ban on teaching evolution in public schools across the state and was the first trial to be broadcasted on the radio. Featuring actors of outstanding caliber, the cast transports the audience back to the crowded, stifling and intense courtroom in Dayton, Tenn., to experience the momentous trial as it happened.
Fast forward to today, and the same questions are before us. What is it that makes this particular branch of science so controversial? Why are we, 80 years after the famous trial, still echoing the arguments of its great orators, Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan?
